Last Quarter End - Week 6: Mindfulness and Stress Management During the Holidays.

Welcome to Week 6 of our Last Quarter Plan series, where we continue to explore strategies to help you thrive in both your personal and professional life, ensuring a strong finish to the year. This week's topic is particularly relevant as we approach the holiday season swiftly.

The holiday season is often synonymous with joy, celebration, and cherished moments with loved ones. However, it can also bring about its fair share of stress and overwhelm. Additionally, for those residing in North America, we recently transitioned out of daylight-saving time, which can induce some stress for our minds and bodies. To me, this time change signals the commencement of my holiday season preparation, and I've found that balancing personal and professional responsibilities during this period can be quite challenging.

One effective way to overcome this challenge is to incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine, a powerful tool for managing stress. Here are three activities I personally integrate into my daily routine to cultivate mindfulness:

1)    Breathing Exercises: Start by finding a tranquil space where you can sit comfortably. Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose, counting to four. Hold your breath for a count of three, and then exhale slowly for a count of three. Repeat this process several times, directing your attention solely to your breath. This simple exercise can help soothe your nervous system and bring you into the present moment. I practice this exercise several times during the day when transitioning from one task or activity to another.

2)    Body Scan Meditation: Lie down and gently close your eyes. Begin at your toes and mentally scan your body, paying close attention to any tension or discomfort. As you identify areas of tension, consciously release and let go. Gradually move upwards, relaxing each muscle group along the way. I find this exercise particularly helpful after concentrating on an activity for over an hour, such as after a coaching session or facilitating a lengthy workshop, especially those conducted online.

3)    Gratitude Journaling: Allocate a few minutes each day to reflect on the things you're grateful for during the holiday season. Record them in a journal or on your phone. Focusing on gratitude can shift your perspective away from stressors and remind you of the positive aspects of this time of year. I prefer to do this in the morning, as it helps me draw upon positive energy to start the day, and occasionally before bed as well.

Stress is a natural response to challenging situations, but when it becomes chronic or overwhelming, it can have significant negative effects on both personal and professional well-being. Chronic stress can lead to physical and emotional health problems such as anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances. It can also strain relationships with family and friends, making it harder to enjoy the holiday season.

In the workplace, high levels of stress can result in decreased productivity, burnout, and diminished overall job satisfaction. It can also impact decision-making abilities and interpersonal relationships at work.

By diligently practicing the three mindfulness exercises mentioned, you can effectively manage stress, enhance your overall well-being, and maintain a healthy work-life balance during the holiday season. Remember that self-care is not selfish; it's a crucial aspect of being the best version of yourself for your loved ones and your professional commitments. Prioritizing mindfulness and stress management can help you navigate the festivities and challenges with ease.

Wishing you a peaceful and stress-free holiday season filled with moments of joy, connection, and well-deserved relaxation. Stay tuned for more Last Quarter Plan insights, and always remember that taking care of yourself is the first step towards success in all areas of life.
